4.1 Check if two numbers are equal without using arithmetic operators or comparison operators.
4.2 Divide an integer by 2^k and return the integer quotient. Do not use any arithmetic operator, loops or pow function.
cpp int divide(int n, int k){ /* Do not use any arithmetic operators or loops or pow function */ }
4.3 Find the kth bit of an integer. Return 1 if it is 1 and 0 otherwise. You should not use any loop, or arithmetic operators. Complete the function below. Bit counting is done from the least significant bit and starts from 0. For example, for n = 19, its binary representation is 10011 the second bit is 0 while the first bit is 1 and the zeroth bit is 1.
cpp int kthbit(int n, int k){ /* Do not use any loop or arithmetic operators */ }
4.4 Find if the number is a power of two, without using any other function call or loop. Complete the if condition below
cpp int main(){ int n; cin>>n; if(/* ... */) cout<<"Number is power of 2"<<endl; else cout<<"Number is not a power of two"<<endl; return 0; }
5. Analysing an algorithm.
Given below is a function/algorithm: You'll enjoy foo!
int foo(int a,int b)
{
int ans=1;
int temp=a;
while(b)
{
if(b&1)
ans*=temp;
temp*=temp;
b/=2;
}
return ans;
}
5.1 Predict the output for foo(3,5).
5.2 What is foo(a,b) computing for general a,b>=0, both integers.
5.3 What is time complexity of foo(a,b) for general a,b>=0, both integers. You should report bigO complexity in terms of a and b.
5.4 Can you point out a problem with this code?
(Spoiler: Will this code produce correct results for large a's and b's?)
5.5 How can you handle negative b?(Note: You can change function declaration to double foo(int a,int b))
5.6 Will this logic/algorithm work if a were float instead of int.(Refer to code below)
double foo(double a,int b)
{
double ans=1;
double temp=a;
while(b)
{
if(b&1)
ans*=temp;
temp*=temp;
b/=2;
}
return ans;
}
By now, I know you are tired of this foo function - just 1 more to go :p
5.7 This logic/algorithm won't work if b were float instead of int. Why?
5.8 Tough, can be skipped- Can you suggest some way to handle floating b? This will create a general function for task identified in 5.2.
End of chapter foo :)
6.Recursion
Recursion is a very powerful and an extremely useful tool. It is astonishing that with it's level of functionality,recursion is actually a very simple concept. Recursion formally defined as(source:wiki/Recursion)
Every recurive function has the following general format
recfunc(params):
if _BaseCondition_ :
return _corresponding BaseResult_
else :
solve _corresponding subproblems_
return result
Now lets work out a example.
int gcd(int a,int b) {
int gcd_ab;
if(b==0) {
gcd_ab = a;
} else {
gcd_ab = gcd(b,a%b);
}
return gcd_ab;
}
Try the following questions on your own. Identify the base condition and reccurence relation.
The Tower of Hanoi is a mathematical game or puzzle. It consists of three rods and a number of disks of different sizes, which can slide onto any rod. The puzzle starts with the disks in a neat stack in ascending order of size on one rod, the smallest at the top, thus making a conical shape.(source:wiki/Tower_of_Hanoi)
"{ {1,3,4,5}, {4,6,24,35},{34,100,101} }". Note that vecs consists of three sorted Vectors of integers in this case. Your function should compute a single sorted (ascending) Vector of integers obtained by merging the constituent vectors. For example, in the above case, the return answer should be
"{1,3,4,4,5,6,24,34,35,100,101}"
. Your merge function should take care of duplicates appropriately as shown in the example above (i.e., duplicate elements should be repeated as many times as in the original set of vectors). Write out the function to achieve this functionality. What is the time complexity of your function in terms of the sizes of the original Vectors?
Note: This is a generalization of the merge function in Minor 2 where you were asked to merge two sorted vectors. This question can be somewhat on the harder side. So you may want to spend time thinking about it before you start implementing. You can also start with writing the pseudocode for a function which merges k given sorted vectors (for some value of k).
8. Is this a prime?
We say a number (greater than equal to two) is prime if it is divisble only by itself and 1. Given a number n (n >=2), write a program to check whether a number is prime or not. How much time does your program take? Can you now write an improved program which runs in time O(square_root_of(n)). For this question, you can assume that integer division takes constant time.
9. Order Order
Given a Vector of numbers, we say that numbers at positions i and j are out of ascending order if (1) i < j and (2) v_i > v_j. Here v_i and v_j denote the elements at positions i and j, respectively in the Vector. Write a function countOutOfOrder(Vector<int> v), which takes as argument a Vector v, and returns the count of the number of pairs which are out of ascending order. You can assume that all the elements in v are unique. What is the time complexity of your program? To take an example, if the vector is"{1,13,41,5,6}"
then the number of pairs which are out ascending order is 4.
10. Inverse of a Matrix
Given a Grid of floating point numbers, find its inverse. You need to implement the following function:
int computeInverse(Grid<float> &inverse, Grid<float> &input_grid) {
// input_grid is the input matrix
// inverse is the grid in which the inverse should be computed
// Return 0, if the inverse of the input_grid exists else return -1
}
Take into consideration, the following points while solving this problem:
determinant
and adjoint
of a matrix11. Numbers are life
11.1 Given a number, can you find the sum of it's divisors? Complete the function below
int DivisorSum(int num) {
// num is the input number
// return an integer containing sum of divisors
// for example - if num = 6 return 1 + 2 + 3 + 6 = 12
}
11.2 Now let's try to find prime factorization of an integer. If you have already implemented a function to check if a number is prime, then this is gonna be easy ! (isn't it?) Complete the function below
vector <int> PrimeFactorization(int num) {
// num is the input number
// return a vector containing prime factorization of the number
// for example - if num = 6 return [2,3]
// if num = 24 return [2,2,2,3], if num = 7 return [7]
}
11.3 Well now, you know there exists a formula for finding sum of divisors using prime factorization of a number Read Here. So why not modify our DivisorSum to use this formula ?
int DivisorSum(int num) {
vector <int> prime_fact = PrimeFactorization(num);
// now use this prime_fact and formula above to compute the sum of divisors
}
12. Anagram Strings
Given 2 strings, report if they are anagrams of each other. You need to implement the following function:
bool isAnagram(string s1, string s2) {
// Return true, if s1 and s2 are anagrams of each other else return false
}
A string is an anagram of another if it can be formed by rearranging the characters of the original string. For example, dog is an anagram of god, but not of cat. Head over to Anagram for more fun examples.
Note: 1. Ignore case. "Dog" is a valid anagram of "god". 2. Consider only strings containing characters from the English alphabet.
13. Rotating vectors
Implement a function rotate(vector
13.1 [Easy] You can use a temporary array of size n.
13.2 [Medium] Use constant space i.e O(1) space.
14. Last Word
[Easy] Given a string s consists of upper/lower-case alphabets and empty space characters ' ', return the length of last word in the string.If the last word does not exist, return 0.
Note: A word is defined as a character sequence consists of non-space characters only.
Example:
Input: "Hello World" Output: 5
13. [EASY] Common programming pattern: Iterate and delete
Deleting elements from a linear data structure (e.g. vector, string, list) while iterating is a common programming pattern. Unfortunately, it is very easy to get this seemily easy code wrong.
13.1 Consider the following function. What is wrong with it?
/* delete every occurrence of char `c` from string `s`
* return the modified string */
string deleteChar(string s, char c)
{
int n = s.size();
for (int i = 0; i < n; ++i) {
if (s.at(i) == c) {
/* `s.at(i)` return same value as `s[i]` if i is a valid index i.e. 0 <= i < s.size(),
else, it throws the "out_of_range" exception */
s.erase(i, 1); // erase element at i
}
}
return s;
}
13.2 Let's say we came up with this "fix":
/* delete every occurrence of char `c` from string `s`
* return the modified string */
string deleteCharV2(string s, char c)
{
for (int i = 0; i < s.size(); ++i) {
if (s.at(i) == c) {
s.erase(i, 1); // erase element at i
}
}
return s;
}
Is this version correct?
13.3 Here are two functions for solving the same problem. Which one do you prefer, which is more efficient? Give reasons for your choice.
| **Solution 1** | **Solution 2** |
|----------------------------------------------------|--------------------------------------------------|
| | |
| string deleteCharV3(string& s, char c) | string deleteCharV4(const string& s, char c) |
| { | { |
| int i = 0; | string ret; |
| while (i < s.size()) { | for (int i = 0; i < s.size(); ++i) { |
| if (s.at(i) == c) | if (s.at(i) != c) |
| s.erase(i, 1); // erase element at i | ret += s.at(i); // copy i'th char |
| else i++; | } |
| } | return ret; |
| return s; | } |
| } | |
Hint for 13.1: Try running with input ("HelloWorld", 'o')
Hint for 13.2: Try running with input ("HelloWorld", 'l')
14. [Easy] Scope: local and global variables 14.1 Is the program correct? If yes, what is the output of the given program? If not, what are the errors?
// usage of local variables
1 #include<iostream>
2 using namespace std;
3
4 void func()
5 {
6 int age=18;
7 }
8
9 int main()
10 {
11 cout<<"Age is: "<<age;
12
13 return 0;
14 }
14.2 What is the output of the given program?
1 #include<iostream>
2 using namespace std;
3
4 void func()
5 {
6 int age=18;
7 cout<<age;
8 }
9
10 int main()
11 {
12 cout<<"Age is: ";
13 func();
14
15 return 0;
16 }
14.3 What is the output of the given program?
1 // usage of global variables
2 #include<iostream>
3 using namespace std;
4
5 // global variable
6 int global = 5;
7
8 // global variable accessed from
9 // within a function
10 void display()
11 {
12 cout<<global<<endl;
13 }
14
15 // main function
16 int main()
17 {
18 display();
19
20 // changing value of global
21 // variable from main function
22 global = 10;
23 display();
24 }
14.4 What if there exists a local variable with the same name as that of global variable inside a function?
1 // usage of local variables
2 // and global variables together
3 #include<iostream>
4 using namespace std;
5
6 // global variable
7 int global = 5;
8
9 // main function
10 int main()
11 {
12 // local variable with same
13 // name as that of global variable
14
15 int global = 2;
16 cout << global << endl;
17 }
15. Custom Sort Given an array A[], write a function that segregates even and odd numbers. The functions should put all even numbers first, and then odd numbers. Example Input = {12, 34, 45, 9, 8, 90, 3} Output = {12, 34, 8, 90, 45, 9, 3}
In the output, the order of numbers can be changed, i.e., in the above example, 34 can come before 12 and 3 can come before 9.
16. Longest Subarray With Maximum Sum We define subsequence as any subset of an array. We define a subarray as a contiguous subsequence in an array. Given an array arr[] containing n integers(can be either positive or negative). The problem is to find the length of the subarray having maximum sum. If there exists two or more subarrays with maximum sum then print the length of the longest subarray.
Example: Input : arr[] = {5, -2, -1, 3, -4} Output : 4 There are two subarrays with maximum sum: First is {5} Second is {5, -2, -1, 3} Therefore longest one is of length 4.
Try to do it in O(n).
